State of the Forums - Looking ahead (PLEASE READ)

Hey guys. I hope you are all doing well.Thank you for joining me on this journey. Although nothing can replace the original Inferno, a small place such as this one can still bring a feeling of warmth and excitement, along with a great deal of satisfaction and intrigue. Of course, experiencing any of these is simply not possible without all of you on board - it starts with the community first - which is why I once again thank you all for being here. In this post I am going to be completely honest with you about the current state of these forums, as well as what will be required to keep this place running smoothly in the future. If you have any questions do not hesitate to ask (by either replying in this thread or by sending me a PM).To begin with, as I mentioned on Twitter, I used a free software to create these forums (it can be located at createaforum.com). Thus everything you are currently seeing and using on these boards is completely free of charge. That's a great thing, but as with everything that is free in this world, it often comes with a (hidden) price. That price in this situation is the domain name, storage space, and security. Domain name: although this is the least of my worries as of now, sometime down the line it would be nice to get rid of the 'createaforum' part in the URL of these boards. The cost of this will be around about $20 annually - not exactly expensive by any means. For now though, I think we are all okay with the current domain. Like I said, this is the least important part. In the mean time, if you all want to collaborate together to form a URL that is of satisfaction to everyone, please do so and let me know (remember, this place belongs to all of you).Storage space: this is by far my biggest concern. The entire forum - since it is free - has a total allowance of 9921 kilobytes (KB) of attachment space. That is less than 10 megabytes (MB), which is 10000 KB. For reference, yesterday there was a total of 318 KB of attachment space used. Doing the math, in about 10 days we will use 3180 KB of storage, and in about 30 that number will be about 9540 KB - just under the threshold limit. Again, these numbers are rough estimates (and quite frankly are not very reliable as they are based off of a mere 1 day sample size). However, as we start posting more and more, and perhaps start gaining a bigger corp of posters, eventually there will be more and more storage space used up every single day. Thus, 9921 kilobytes just won't be able to cut it in the long run, which is why sometime down the line we will need a storage space upgrade. For now, I have the attachments set on 'recycle' after 25 days - which means all attachments in every thread will be automatically deleted after 25 days of being posted. This will assure that we have somewhat of a self-sustaining system. Once we start getting more traffic, and get closer to the season, an upgrade in storage will be necessary. The 9921 KB of storage that we have now can increase to 250 MB (250,000 KB) by a one-time payment of $15. Security: safety is always a concern, but I want to assure you guys that nothing 'bad' can happen to any of you individually, as long as the passwords you are using for your accounts is different than the password of the email account that you registered with. Since this is a free product, if anything were to happen to the forums - e.g. hacked by hijackers - there would be little to no assistance provided by the company to get the boards back. Again, this is very unlikely to occur, but I feel you should all know the risks. Having our own domain is some of the best protection against hackers and DDOSer's, which is why it is crucial that sometime down the road we purchase our own custom URL. There are many other upgrades that can be made as well, and we will get to them little by little. For now, the most important things are the storage followed by the security. To sum it up, an increase in storage from 9921KB to 250 MB will cost a one-time payment of $15, and an increase in security (along with a custom domain) will be a yearly payment of about $18-$20.Thank you all for sticking with me and reading all of this. I know it is a lot to take in, and by no means do we need to make any of these upgrades at this immediate moment. It will all come together as long as we stick together.Best,Carnageta
